University days

1990, Airlie Hall of Residence, Dundee University. A new student glided into the canteen; tanned with long bleach blond hair, dressed for summer and grinning like a Cheshire cat, he looked ridiculous and I knew he had to be my friend.

Nick's uniqueness and wonderful charismatic character kept me entertained throughout the uni years and beyond. Nick was always up to mischief and we had so much laughter and fun together. He was always way cooler, more adventurous, driven and determined than the rest of us. He was smart and despite appearances, he did work hard and so his successful career in finance and wanderlust to travel further afield was not a surprise.

Nick's eclectic taste in music captures some of this spirit. He introduced me to Crosby, Stills and Nash - we loved Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and would fast forward to the upbeat happy bit in the middle of the song and dance around to this. Another favourite was Les Negresses Vertes album with Zobi la Mouche, a French punk/ gypsy song with nonsense lyrics. Nick would memorise lyrics and his party piece was to quote songs in the middle of conversations to great comic effect.

Nick was enigmatic and captivating, he was the best company but it was his depth of personality and knowing that he had a genuinely big, warm, caring heart, loyal to both his family and friends that we will remember him by.
